Pre-cruise checklist for cruising with kids

You’ve just booked your highly anticipated cruise, but what’s next? Here’s a checklist to help guide you through the process.

First thing’s first

Just after booking, make sure you do the following:

• Verify your booking information is correct
• Update your personal details
• Set-up an online account
• Print out cruise documents
• Select a check-in time

Three to six months prior to departure

It’s up to you to decide how soon to do the following, but the sooner the better.

• Passport validity check
• Visa applications made (if necessary)
• Doctor appointments made (if necessary)
• Notify the cruise of any medical conditions/disabilities
• Notify the cruise of special dietary requirements
• Search for shore excursions (so you don’t waste time upon arriving at a new port)
• Check-in online
• Book flights
• Book airport/port transfers

Two months prior to departure

The time for your holiday is almost upon you and there are a few last-minute things you should square away promptly.

• Obtain necessary medical supplies
• Purchase travel insurance
• Notify your bank of your upcoming travels
• Research port information – short and long-term parking facilities, early arrival and luggage drop procedures

One day prior to departure

This is it, the very last-minute checklist.

• Travel documents are ready to go
• Cruise tags are attached to all bags
• Emergency contact information
• Transport to port is arranged
• Ensure luggage meets restrictions

Important travel requirements

There are always a few must-haves and must-dos before you travel.

• Ensure every member of your family has valid passports and visas.
• Pregnant guests – most cruises advise women to not travel aboard a cruise during their 3rd trimester

What to pack

Here are a few must-haves in your bag:

• Sunscreen
• Separate carry-on bag – this is in case your suitcase doesn’t arrive early enough, having a small carry-on with clothes, swimmers and medication will be a lifesaver.
• Clothing options – most cruises have areas with dress codes, make sure you take note of the events that will happen during your stay. The best way to prepare is to have enough options to cover a range of events – casual, smart casual, cocktail dresses, eveningwear (ball gowns for the ladies, penguin suits for the gentlemen) and possibly a costume for dress up theme nights.
• Money – you will find ATMs on board but it’s always safest to have some cash on you at all times, as well as your cards. Make sure to take low-denomination notes for shore excursions.
• On-shore pack –a small backpack including hand sanitiser, anything needed for daily activities, shoes, jumper, water and snacks.

What not to pack

Generally all cruises will supply each guest with a beach towel, bathrobe, hairdryer, iron, laundry detergent and travel adapter (double check with specific cruises on that last one).
