Where to go in Vietnam with kids

Ho Chi Minh City

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the bustling economic heart of Vietnam in the southern region of the country. The city brings together old and new with wondrous monuments.

Ho Chi Minh City is a good starting point for your Vietnam family itinerary as many flights from Australia land at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Exploring its impressive line-up of museums, markets and monuments could take weeks. The dry season is between April and December, making this the best timeframe to visit Ho Chi Minh City.

Many of Ho Chi Minh’s colonial landmarks are located around District 1 including Independence Palace, the Saigon Opera House, Notre Dame Cathederal and the Jade Emperor Pagoda. While in this area, make a pit stop at Ben Thanh Market for a bite to eat or some souvenirs in an authentic Vietnamese setting.

Exploring Vietnam’s history is also a must when travelling here, and a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels on the outer fringes of Ho Chi Minh City provides a very interactive way for kids to learn about times gone by. The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers during the Vietnam War as hiding spots, communication and supply routes and even living quarters. Today, visitors can walk through two sections of the tunnel network which have been enlarged, but beware, they are not for the claustrophobic. The tunnels are very dark and very small and although there are no age restrictions for exploring them, the littlies might prefer to sit this one out and take a snap in the entrance of the tunnel instead.

The Cu Chi War History Museum is also close by and provides an interesting overview of the tunnels. Then visit the War Remnants Museum to delve deeper into Vietnam’s past.

For a truly unique family experience, head to the Cai Be Floating Market. The markets are spread across boats on the Tien River stocked with fresh produce. The markets just under two hours from Ho Chi Minh City.

A street food tour is a great way to sample the best of Ho Chi Minh City’s fresh, vibrant cuisine. Crispy bánh mì rolls packed with pork and paté are Ho Chi Minh’s signature dish. The food alone is reason enough to visit, and aspiring chefs will love learning to make traditional Vietnamese dishes on a farm tour and cooking class.

Hoi An

With its vividly hued pagodas, pastel shopfronts and buttery yellow houses entangled with pink bougainvillaea, the historic port town of Hoi An is a dream for families. You can reach Hoi An via plane from Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi. Another option is a 17-hour overnight train ride from Ho Chi Minh.

The coastal city resides on the banks of the Thu Bon River in central Vietnam. With mild temperatures and sunnier days from February to April, the dry season is the ideal time of year for visiting Hoi An’s rice paddies and beaches.

A ban on vehicles and bicycles in the Old Town means you can roam the lantern-strewn streets easily with the kids. The UNESCO World Heritage Listed area is an impressive fusion of Chinese, Japanese and European architecture. With the melting pot owing to merchants from the 15th to early 19th century. The Japanese-style bridge in the town dates back to the 18th century. Its entrance is guarded by a pair of monkeys and a pair of dogs. Tân Kỳ ancestral house also provides an interesting look into the past. If you need to fuel up between navigating the tight alleys and open markets of the Old Town make sure to sample some bánh mì at the markets or duck into one of the many tea houses for a treat.

After exploring town, water babies can head to An Bang or Cua Dai Beach. Discover prolific marine life at the Cham Islands, a group of eight pristine islets lying along the coast. For something completely different, glide through the maze-like canals of the Bay Mau Coconut Forest on a basket boat adventure. These hand-woven wonders, crafted from bamboo and coconut leaves, offer a glimpse into traditional fishing life. Just remember to hold on tight when your boat driver transforms your vessel into a whirling dervish while belting out karaoke classics. Because it will happen.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the city on a full moon, the monthly lantern festival sees thousands of enchanting lights unleashed on the river. Little ones can even enjoy crafting their own at a lantern-making workshop.

Venture out of the city by bike and take a leisurely cycle through sweeping rice paddies. There are several guided bicycle tours. If you’re lucky you might spot the occasional water buffalo on your travels. Both Cẩm Thanh and Trà Quế provide some picturesque cycle routes. Take a break at the island of Cam Kim and enjoy a traffic-free meander through the rural landscape.

For authentic street food, you can’t go past Hoi An’s Central Market. In Hoi An, the allure of Old Town combined with sweeping rice fields makes for an excellent addition to any itinerary.

Hanoi

Located eight hours south of the mountains, Hanoi – Vietnam’s capital city – gives an insight into the country’s past with crumbling colonial buildings. The city can be reached easily by flying into Noi Bai International Airport from most major cities, while buses and trains are alternative options for internal travel. Hanoi also provides travellers with world-class restaurants, art galleries and chic cafes.

To comfortably enjoy all the city has to offer, the best time of year to visit is during the shoulder seasons in March, April and September through November. The temperatures and weather during these periods are more pleasant compared to the hotter and wetter months.

Dive into Hanoi’s rambling Old Quarter, a labyrinth of ancient temples, traditional shops, food stalls and street kitchens. Some of the landmarks date back as far as the 14th century. The best way to see Hanoi’s Old Quarter is by cyclo. A bicycle ridden by a local with a seat and shade cloth over the front. The Old Quarter has 36 streets each named after the merchandise that was traded there from the 15th century onwards.

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a must-visit for lovers of history where the embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh now lays. However, plan ahead, be prepared for queues and dress appropriately (no shorts, sleeveless shirts or short skirts) as this is one of the most visited attractions in Hanoi and has varying opening hours.

Join the locals at Hoàn Kiếm Lake in the heart of the city for a morning stroll. Then explore the postcard-pretty Temple of Literature.

Continue your explorations by visiting several of Hanoi’s other historical and cultural landmarks, including One Pillar Pagoda, Hanoi Opera House and the Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre. Watching puppeteers wade through waist-deep water and re-enact scenes from village life using colourful wooden puppets is a treat for all ages. Located at Hoàn Kiếm Lake, this water-fuelled entertainment is also close to Turtle Tower and the site of many a local’s morning Tai Chi routine.

Halong Bay

Halong Bay dons the cover of many a postcard sent from Vietnam. It has an otherworldly beauty stemming from towering limestone islands that spike into impossibly emerald waters. From March to May and September to November, the skies are mostly clear and the rain is minimal, so you can enjoy the outdoors under the sun.

As Halong Bay is situated in the northeastern part of Vietnam, relatively close to Hanoi, you can visit on a day trip or a multi-night cruise from the major city. The three-hour trip from Hanoi to the ethereal Halong Bay is a must.

While on the water you can swim, kayak and explore hidden cave formations and forgotten temples. A visit to Dau Go Cave on Dau Go Island is a must. After climbing 90 steps you will be treated to an interior full of stalactites. There are several other caves in Halong Bay worth exploring, so be sure to look for a cruise itinerary that caters to all your desires.

The kids will be left as enchanted by the sight of the soaring limestone karsts dotted throughout the emerald waters as they will be by the legends of the family of celestial dragons. These dragons are said to have created the bay as they breathed divine fire and jewels while descending upon the area to protect Vietnam from invaders. Don’t miss the popular Sun World Halong Park for its multiple rides, water slides and attractions.

Cát Bà Island

South of Halong Bay, Cát Bà Island is also worth exploring as the jungle surrounds are home to 32 animal and 70 bird species. You can hike up to the island’s highest peak for views across the bay or make a trip up to Cannon Fort; you’ll wander past two preserved gun emplacements from WWII before surfacing at similarly spectacular lookouts.

Hue

There is no better place to delve into Vietnam’s tangled history than in Hue, a small city perched right in the middle of the country’s coastline. Visit the city by flying to Phu Bai Airport from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, taking the scenic train from Da Nang or travelling by sleeper bus.

Explore, eat, repeat: the motto of your stay in Hue. This bustling city on the banks of the Perfume River offers no shortage of landmarks. Families travelling to Hue should aim to visit from February to April, as the cooler temperatures and dry weather are the perfect conditions for comfortable sightseeing.

For little history buffs, the Imperial City, the walled citadel, is non-negotiable. The former imperial capital sprawls across 520 hectares, paying homage to the Nguyen Dynasty’s past grandeur. Step through its elaborate gates and be transported back in time, surrounded by fortified stone walls and the remains of the emperor’s residence, temples and palaces.

Embark on a guided tour of My Son Sanctuary, a testament to the Champa Kingdom’s rich history. Dating back to the fourth century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts intricate brick towers dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is easily navigable even for the littlest legs.

Break up the history lesson with a visit to Hue’s vibrant open-air markets, where a chaotic and colourful mix of produce, flowers, clothing, crafts, street food and souvenirs await. The tombs of Tự Đức, Minh Mạng and Khải Định also lie along the river and are home to unique architecture and history.

Block some time out between sightseeing for some culinary experiences, starting at Dong Ba Market for some local snacks. Be sure to sample some Nem Lụi, Bánh Khoái and Bánh Bột Lọc Tran on your travels. After you’ve refuelled, explore Tu Hieu Monastery for some serenity then Thien Mu Pagoda. The pagoda has seven storeys dedicated to a Buddha that appeared in human form.

Da Nang/Danang

Two hours away from Hue is the thriving seaside city of Da Nang. Home to inviting beaches, culture, temples and mouthwatering food. Domestic and international flights are the fastest transport option for reaching Da Nang, while the Vietnam Railways train from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is longer and more picturesque.

Da Nang experiences optimum weather conditions, pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds from February to May and September to October.

Take the kids to splash and surf at My Khe or Non Nuoc Beach, then explore My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Book a tour to learn about the ancient Hindu temples’ fascinating history. Explore the Marble Mountains, where limestone hills conceal caves, towers, and pagodas crafted by Mahayana Buddhists and Nguyen Dynasty kings.

Thrill-seeking families will want to visit Da Nang Downtown or ride the world’s longest cable car to the mountaintop theme park Sun World Ba Na Hills. Sun World is also home to Golden Bridge; Vietnam’s famous bridge held 1414 metres aloft by giant stone hands.

Take a serene stroll around Linh Ung Pagoda on Son Tra Peninsula, home to an epic 67-metre statue of Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. And when day turns to night, kids will marvel at the Dragon Bridge that spans the Han River, illuminated with LED lights and breathing fire and water.

Make a stay of it at the stunning Sheraton Grand Danang Beach Resort & Spa, surrounded by natural and cultural wonders. Mum and dad can head to the luxurious spa, while the kids soak up the sun and splash in the infinity pool. The resort also has an extensive program of activities for families.

Nha Trang

If beach days and snorkelling are your family’s thing, Nha Trang is for you. The southern coastal city is celebrated for its sun-drenched beaches, gin-clear waters and luxe resorts. To reach Nha Trang, you must fly into Cam Ranh International Airport or catch Vietnam’s coastal train from a major city. For sunny skies and clear waters all holiday long, visit during the dry season between February and May.

Nha Trang Beach is especially popular for diving and water sports, but it’s worth checking out the beaches on the nearby cluster of islands, including Hòn Lớn and Hòn Tre.

Visit the peaceful Ba Ho Waterfalls, or veg out on Trần Phú Beach, a family favourite. Hòn Lao Island, home to the largest monkey population in Vietnam, is another easy-to-reach destination, with day tours available from Nha Trang city. Here you can snorkel in calm waters and walk alongside the cheeky critters – just remember they are wild animals and aren’t afraid to take a nip.

Spanish luxury made its debut along Vietnam’s pristine coastline in July 2023, with the first Gran Meliá resort in Asia opening its doors in Nha Trang. Boasting 94 expansive private pool villas, the five-star property blends Spanish style, sophisticated design and personalised service with the beauty and elegance of Vietnamese culture. Sapa

Home to majestic mountain ranges and centuries-old rice terraces, the north of Vietnam is replete with family-friendly fun in absurdly scenic locations. Sapa is approximately eight hours from Hanoi, with short domestic flights or longer sleeper train trips from the major city to Lao Cai Airport available. From Lao Cai, take a bus or taxi to Sapa.

The best time of year to visit Sapa depends on your activity preferences. If you want dry but cool temperatures for mountain and rice terrace trekking, September to November is ideal. However, April and May have generally pleasant conditions, while February and March is a popular time for viewing plum and peach blossoms.

Within the shadow of the country’s tallest peak, Mount Fansipan, lies Sapa. Responsible travellers will love the range of sustainable tours and workshops hosted by Sapa’s ethnic minorities. Then the whole family will squeal with delight riding the thrilling cable car through the clouds to the top of the mountain. Sapa also makes a perfect base from which to tackle some of the best hiking trails in the country.

Cam Ranh

The crystal-blue beaches and dizzying pagodas of Cam Ranh are just a few of the reasons families are starting to flock to what is Vietnam’s best-kept holiday secret. The city is located on the pristine peninsula that forms Cam Ranh Bay in southeaster Vietnam and is conveniently accessed via Cam Ranh International Airport.

Famous for its stunning natural beaches, the dry season from January to August is the best time to unwind on the sand and soak up some sun in this coastal city.

Cam Ranh is a former US military base that has only opened for tourism in 2016. An hour south of Nha Trang, the city is quaint, cool and relatively quiet. Visit stunning seaside spots like Binh Lap and Bai Dai Beach. Baby beachcombers will love the sandy coves and the Tu Van Pagoda, made from dry seashells and coral.

Stay at the Alma Resort Cam Ranh for luxurious family accommodation. Located on the beachfront, the resort has 12 swimming pools cascading down to the beach, water sports, a water park, wave pool and lazy river. While parents enjoy pampering at Le Spa, there’s an activity-packed kids’ club and zone for teens.

Wake up to the soothing lapping of Bai Dai Beach, interrupted by joyous giggles as your family starts the day with a splash at Meliá Vinpearl Cam Ranh Beach Resort. Take a stroll along the white sand, enjoy a buffet breakfast amidst lush tropical gardens or leap into one of the resort’s sprawling pools. There’s even a dedicated children’s pool, providing a fun and safe space for little ones. Kids will love the games, arts and crafts, and treasure hunts at the Kidsdom Kids’ Club.

Phu Quoc

Nicknamed Pearl Island for its gleaming white beaches and crystalline waters, Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island. As it is situated in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 45km off the mainland, the island must be reached by plane from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. For a slower but more scenic journey, ferries sail from cities in the Mekong Delta Phu Quoc.

One of Vietnam’s best-kept secrets, idyllic Phu Quoc Island sits just off the coast of Cambodia. Expect abundant sunshine and minimal rain from November to April, so beachgoers can focus on enjoying the tranquil turquoise waters and bone-white sand. And its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve will entice nature lovers. Phu Quoc offers a little something for everyone.

Phu Quoc National Park occupies over half of the island, and a visit to view rare flora and fauna, including long-tailed macaques and silver langurs at the Khu Rung Nguyen Sinh Forest Reserve, is a must.

Thrill seekers will want to head to VinWonders Phu Quoc for its fun-themed lands, thrill rides, splash-tastic water park and 120-metre-high speed slide and live entertainment. And Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc is another winner for families with 150 species of free-ranging animals. After all that water, wildlife, thrills and spills, a visit to Dinh Cau Rock will round your visit nicely. Home to a brightly coloured lighthouse and Buddhist shrine where local fishermen pray before embarking on the seas, it is as rich in culture as it is idyllic, especially at sunset.

Family-friendly Mövenpick Resort Waverly Phu Quoc is nestled among the coconut palms on heavenly Ong Lang Beach. It boasts a water park, six swimming pools (including two kids’ pools and a lagoon-style pool), a day spa, beach club and water sports. Junior travellers will especially love the resort’s Little Birds kids’ club and the M Lounge club for teens.

Da Lat

Three hours southwest of Nha Trang, Da Lat is fit for a postcard. Serene lakes, waterfalls, pretty flower gardens and French colonial architecture set the scene in Da Lat, an ideal stop for families due to its mild climate.

Expect lush landscapes and kid-friendly attractions, including a scenic cable car ride leading to Truc Lam Pagoda.

Visit the central ZooDoo Zoo or the Datanla Waterfall, and for something completely different, book a stay at the joyously chaotic Hang Nga Guesthouse, also known as Crazy House. Its maze of oddities and hallucinations will make you feel like you’re in a Salvador Dalí artwork come to life.

Ninh Binh

Under two hours south of Hanoi is the province of Ninh Binh, a magical landscape characterised by weaving rivers and sheer limestone mountains. It’s no wonder this region is known locally as Halong Bay on Land.

Trains run direct from Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, but the buses from Hanoi are more frequent and less costly. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November through April, or between May and July when the lotus flowers bloom into a sea of blush pink.

The region’s sprawling rice paddies and serene natural environment make it the perfect destination to avoid the hustle and bustle of other crowded cities. One of the best ways to see Ninh Binh in all its glory is by boat, specifically a traditional sampan. Depart from Tam Cốc or Tràng An boat dock on a guided sampan tour down the gentle waterways, passing towering karsts and hidden grottoes.

For a blend of rich history, head to Hoa Lư, the first ancient capital of Vietnam dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries, or explore Bai Dinh Temple, the largest complex of Buddhist temples in the country.
