Ever considered doing a ski season with kids?

The Carson family moved to Revelstoke Mountain Resort for a season of fun on the snow. Mum Caley spoke to Helen Hayes about their adventure.

We all might have dreamed about spending a season in an international snow resort with the family. I certainly did. But dreaming it, and doing it, are two different things. For the Carson family – parents Andrew and Caley and their two daughters Indie (age 10) and Zahlie (age 8), the dream was always going to become a reality.

Caley (@keeping.up.with.the.carsons) fell in love with the snow and the snow lifestyle when she worked as a ‘lifty’ at Mt Buller after she finished school. She met Andrew and they worked together for a few seasons at Buller. When the children came along, they were introduced to snow quite early.

“Indie was four and Zahlie was two when we did our first full-time season as a family. We knew just a couple weeks in that it was going to be our lives going forward. The girls just absolutely loved it and blew us away with how quickly they picked it up. As much as we all love it, it’s not all smooth sailing – we really put in the hard yards when they were young, there were plenty of bribes and plenty of tantrums too! I’m sure every parent on the snow can relate to this,” Caley said.

The family started thinking about spending a season in Canada around five years ago. “We decided to plan a holiday first to see how the girls liked it and decided from there. It was going to take some time to plan (financially) so the wheels were in motion a long time ago

Operation snow-go!

“During the 2019/20 Northern Hemisphere season we went on a six-week road trip around British Columbia and visited quite a few mountains. We told the girls we were going to come back in a couple of years, so to take note of each and choose their favourite. Fast forward three years and here we are, in Revelstoke.”

“Revelstoke is known for its steep terrain, amazing off-piste skiing and great pow. Aside from the ski hill, we really liked the town and its friendly family vibe. It was important to us that the girls make a great network of buddies and have plenty to do outside of skiing,” Caley said.

As for school, Indie and Zahlie are enjoying a ‘Shreducation’, with the emphasis this season on skiing and enjoying a winter holiday together as a family.

“But having said that we are also doing some basic homeschooling, with lots of reading and going through workbooks. When it comes to ski school, the girls are really into that. “We signed them up to the Revelstoke Ski Club and they really look forward to that each week. It consists of full days every Saturday and Sunday, a half-day Wednesday and a dryland session one evening per week. It’s a fantastic program for kids to really develop and improve their alpine skills and technique, all-mountain skiing, mountain safety and teamwork.

“When not on the snow, the girls are loving ice skating at the local rink and going to the public swimming pool which has a hot tub, sauna/steam room, lazy river, diving board, water slide and a rock climbing wall. We also go to the library on a regular basis and walk around the lake.”

The highlight of their time in Revelstoke so far has been “the skiing and watching the girls fall in love with the mountain. Their skiing has improved so much (as has their stamina!) and watching them thrive has been amazing. The community is also really incredible, there are so many friendly, like-minded people in town.”

The Carsons would absolutely recommend having a season overseas. Caley said: “Skiing and snowboarding is one of the few sports where you can get out there and do it together – it’s so special and we really value our time on the slopes as a family. As the girls get older, I’m sure they won’t want to hang with us as much, so we’re making the most of it while we can. The experience is so much easier to do while they’re in primary school and it’s not as crucial to their education. As for the Carsons, Caley says: “We are going to do everything we can to do it again next year.”
