NYC’s Met has an entire section of its website dedicated to little learners called MetKids. The online-only experience features a time machine where you can uncover objects and artwork by time period, idea or location. In addition, it offers videos, an interactive map and a ‘Big Ideas’ search tool allowing kids to look into topics such as inventions, battles or fashion – and see all the relevant artefacts.

The Louvre, Paris
Best for: Kids obsessed with ancient Egypt
The Louvre is considered the world’s greatest art museum, visited by millions of tourists in person each year. Although it may be temporarily closed, you can still access it’s many treasures online through a selection of virtual tours based on its permanent collections – explore Egyptian antiquities, the remains of the Louvre’s moat (which dates back to 1190) and go on a search for the iconic Mona Lisa. The tour is super easy to navigate, with an expandable mini-map that lets you click on the exhibits you would most like to view.

Best for: Kids who love to read

Located in the heart of Paris, this museum was set up in the former Orsay Railway Station and displays a vast collection of art from 1848 to 1914. On the virtual tour, visitors can take a stroll through the intricate hallways, perusing works from numerous famous French artists, including Monet, Gaugin and Van Gogh. Kids especially will love the Impressionist art, which is known for having colour and movement (so littles can understand how the artist actually painted the work), and depicting everyday life (a great way for them to relate to the pieces). Beloved by tourists and locals alike, the Natural History Museum in London houses hundreds and thousands of treasures (but may be better known to your kids for its feature in the Paddington movie). You can enjoy much of what it has to offer in its interactive online guide, such as seeing the emperor penguin eggs brought home by some of the first Antarctic expeditions to taking a peek at some of the oldest human skeletons ever found. This one is a great choice for all ages, with just the right mix of info and intrigue!
