Couple slammed for ‘brain-dead’ act while camping

A British couple have been slammed as “brain-dead” on social media after they were caught camping with their child on a cliff edge in Yorkshire. 

The family’s tent was spotted along the Cleveland Way Trail in Staithes, just steps away from the edge of a cliff believed to be around 200m high. 

This stretch of coastline is particularly prone to recurring landslides, making the placement of their tent even riskier.

Staithes and Whitby Coastguard were called to the area to usher the family away from the “dangerous location”.

“Today’s call was to attend a section of the Cleveland Way to issue safety advice to two adults and a child camping on the cliff edge,” the Staithes Coastguard said in a Facebook post. 

“Safety advice was given from Coastguard Rescue Officers due to the dangerous location of their tent, especially with recent landslips.”

An officer from North Yorkshire Police also attended the spot as the family were in violation of the coronavirus restrictions in the U.K.. Currently, the restrictions don’t permit people to stay outside their home overnight unless for essential purposes.

Social media not impressed

The couple have now been slammed on social media for their choice of holiday spot.

“Horrendous! The child must have been petrified camping so close to that edge. They need to be severely punished for this!” one person wrote. 

“Beggars belief! You can see where the ground has partially broken away! Braindead,” another commented. 

“Absolutely clueless. Should get a stupidity fine as well as a Covid breach fine, wrote a third person. 

One woman did come to the family’s defence saying she saw them earlier that day:  “I saw this couple and child yesterday on the Cleveland Way carrying all their gear and did wonder about their situation. As none of us know what this is I really feel it is not right to be horrible towards them”. 

However, this didn’t seem to simmer the hundreds of harsh complaints.
